Rose

The wolf doesn’t move, his icy blue eyes watching me closely as my heart races in my chest. A long minute passes as I squeeze my eyes shut, waiting for the all too familiar bite of teeth to sink into my flesh.

But nothing happens.

Finally, I peek up through the lashes of one eye at the beast. He watches me, his head cocked to the side. Opening both eyes, I swear I the creature gives me a wolfish grin.

He doesn’t move to pounce or even take a step toward me as I force myself to relax.

The wolf’s tail is swishing from side to side as his head remains tilted to one side. If I didn’t know better, I’d almost say he looks harmless.

Almost.

But obviously, I can’t shake the memory of Rykker’s teeth sinking into my thigh. As if reading my mind, the wolf whimpers softly and takes a tentative step toward me. He pauses, cocking his head to the other side as if waiting for my reaction.

A nervous laugh escapes me as he tilts his head to each side again.

Like this, he reminds me of the alley cats that were my constant companions back in the city. Except far more lethal than them.

Several minutes pass as he watches me, seemingly waiting for me to relax enough for him to come closer.

I’m not sure I want this creature any closer to me. Still, my heartbeat eventually steadies, and my shoulders soften.

He takes another step toward me, watching me closely with those deep blue eyes. I reach out a tentative hand, wondering for a moment if I’ve completely lost my mind. His warm breath tickles my palm, and I force myself to not flinch.

He moves another step closer, and I can feel the heat of his body rolling off of him. Staring unblinkingly at him, I reach out to touch his forehead. He leans into my touch, and I’m not sure if I should smile or run screaming. His eyes watch me as I gently pet his head.

I can only hope that I’m not offending him by treating him like a dog, but I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with this massive wolf. He pushes his head into my hand, and I get the sense that he doesn’t mind my touch.

His fur is thick and surprisingly soft against my skin. As I continue to run my fingers through his fur, I can’t help but notice the feel scarring lacing his body … not to mention that the wolf is missing one of his ears.

I suppose it makes sense that both wolf and man would share many of the same markings and wounds, they are one and the same after all … right?

I know I’m far more interested in him than I should be, but I can’t seem to help myself. How often does one come face to face with a wolf shifter and live to tell the tale?

The wolf comes closer and kneels down before me so that we’re now eye to eye.
